Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has made La Liga history by becoming the first coach to play 700 official matches at the helm of one team. This unique result was achieved on 23 November 2024 in a match against Alaves, which ended in a 2-0 victory for Atletico.

The Simeone era: more than a decade of success  

Simeone took charge of Atletico in December 2011 and since then has not just transformed the club, but has made it one of the major forces in European football. During his time in charge, he has led the Matrasnics to 11 trophies including:  

• 2 La Liga championships (2013/14, 2020/21) which broke the long-standing hegemony of Real Madrid and Barcelona;
• 2 Europa League victories (2011/12, 2017/18);
• Spanish Cup, Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup and other trophies; 
• 2 Champions League finals (2014, 2016).
